Italy September 1944. These are a few memories not likely in order as I find that you have to have a reference spot and when you fail to find that spot you go with what you have in the old head.
I spoke of one sgnaler called Smith getting a miraculous moment that some one was looking after him when a shell hit just directly in front of him. I checked with Orme Payne, the Signal Sergeant that saw this bursting shell and LC smith coming out of the dust cloud and flying debris.
His words were according to Orme were "IMAGINE THAT". Smith was quiet spoken and you wondered how he was here at all. On another occasion Orme was checking a phone line between two areas, a command post and one of the troops. Smith was on the other phone and the connection was not good.
The phone line would have been a single wire and a metal spike driven into the ground made what was called an earth return. Orme told Smith pour some water on the spike .
Smith replied he did not have any water. Orme said well piss on it. Smth replied I cannot pee. Orme by this time said get some water from someone else or get some one else to piss on it. Smith replied that he did not want to ask any one else to pee on the stake. I think by this time Orme jumped in his jeep and went to Smith’s location and watered down the spike regaining good communication once again.
